I'd say you're both spot on there fellas. Driving to work this morning started with a lot less knocking than yesterday, almost like whatever was knocking has been bashed out of the way. The centre and link to the flexi are joined on a movable flange as you say Pud, I just pushed them right in conkers deep. It looked ok and didn't knock with a hefty shake once finished and my first drive had no knocks and was quite quiet, must have settled in now though.
Half way to work the basy drone which sounded like it was coming from right under the hand brake seemed to dissipate like someone had just turned the volume down (sealing its little leeks as colinbull said)... Ahh, bliss! I thought I'd gone deaf!
The crappy flexi pipe is more than likely the culprit, although to be fair, it was £40! ...for £40 it is doing what it says on the tin (came with a fitting kit btw- 2 gaskets + nuts and bolts).
Over all very happy with the results 'right now'.
