Help ! Alfa 156 v6- Alternator or waterpump problems ?
Hello everyone, I am in a bit of a pickle.
So about a month ago I was driving along and a good awfull sound came from my engine bay followed by a high pitch sqeele and my battery light came on. So I pulled over quickly to see what it was and popped the bonnet to see some rubber smoke comming from where the alternator is. Turned the engine off and called my mate to tow me home.
Now before I got the car the cam belt and waterpump were done around 11000 miles ago and on the paperwork it said there was some sqeeking coming from the alternator. So me putting two and two together, after reading some threads on here and my car had a few weeks before made some belt squealing sounds I thought hey that alternator is knackered so il have a look at it.
First I tried to start the car again once home to see if it had gone away and the engine wouldn't turn over, almost sounded like it had no battery !
Now I'm under the car, took the alternator belt off and had a good feel of everything to see if it was moving freely which it was. Now although the alternator moved it was however a little sticky and the shaft seemed to have quite a bit of play in it. So I think yer It must be that and try to start t engine again. engine starts first time with no effort and runs fine of the battery. So I think must be the alternator.... Right ?
Fast forward to today. I am confident when it comes to cars so have everything in place to do my alternator.
Now I took it for a drive to heat the oil up as I'm going to change that at the same time as the alternator and the car is overheating ... Nightmare. No heaters and the return from the radiator is cold. Those symptoms say to me waterpump.
Now I'm new to alfas and just want a definitive answer.
Does the waterpump drive from the aux belt and the reason its overheating ?
Or does it drive from the cam belt and I'm looking at changing that too ?
Help please !
