Hemp pipe seal material for oil drain plug?
OK, I know this was probably a bad idea, but I had a stripped drain plug which I re-tapped from 18mm to 20mm. Problem was that the tap didn't go in perfectly straight (I don't know how you could make a perfectly straight thread without removing the pan and carefully positioning it on a drill press or milling machine). Long story short, the first attempt failed, since there was too much angle for the alu seal ring to compress adequately. I did some teflon tape (which I think is mostly worthless), but it didn't help. Today I did the hemp - what German plumbers have been using for hundreds of years and swear to, but being American born and bred, was unknown to me. So far the seal is good, after only a few trips around town. I wonder, though, how the hemp will stand up to high temperature? It seems like it should be OK, but I can find no relevant documentation online. I'll report as I go.
