My first post in the AO forums, having just acquired my third Alfa, a 56 plate GT 1.9 JTDM which is lovely, and 50mpg!
Previous Alfa history - (Fiat Uno Turbo, Tipo 16v), 156 1.8 Lusso, followed by a 156 2.0 Selespeed Sportwagon. The Sportwagon cost me 2k to replace most of the Selespeed gearbox and was the final nail in it's coffin for me. Pt/ex'd it for a Mondeo ST220 which served me well for 6 years until a drunk driver decided to use it for target practice and it got written off
. Always fancied a GT, so took the plunge and bought this one a couple of weeks ago in a private sale.
Things that sealed the deal was it had service history, new cambelt, water pump and clutch, looked tidy enough other than a few minor random Alfa-issues (more on them another day!).
Anyhow, 2 weeks in, I'm parking on the M25 yesterday morning and oh dear clutch pedal gone, couple hours later, recovered to local (non alfa) garage who I trust and have looked after several of my cars over the years. RAC man reckoned it was slave cylinder, garage called me today to say they reckon it needs whole new gearbox!
I haven't seen the evidence yet - going up there tomorrow after I've taken my brave pills to inspect the damage. They say whoever did the clutch recently has damaged the casing and this has caused internal damage to 'box.
Interested in thoughts on best options for worst and best case options - have already thought of going back to the place that did the clutch before I bought it but the "invoice" was a scrappy bit of carbon copy paper that I could barely read so stupidly threw it away
They're in Manchester anyway and I am in South London.
Am I best just to bite the bullet and go for a recon box, or save some dosh and get it rebuilt? Any idea on what sort of £££ I'm looking at? Recommendations for gearbox specialist in South of England?
