T.Spark Gearbox oil change guide
Today, along with engine oil change, I also renewed the gearbox oil.
Fairly straight forward, 1st I had to cut 3/4" off a 12mm allen key so that it could fit in between the subframe into the drain plug, its fairly tight!
I then undone the fill plug so that the gear oil can flow out easily.
Then, I got a small funnel, and cut it in half, because there is only enough gap to fit a cut down Allen key in for access, the oil going everywhere was inevitable, so with the funnel cut in half, I wedged it up above the subframe where the front wishbone mountings are. When I undone the drain plug, the funnel worked a treat and there was no mess!
Next i jacked up the O/S side of the car to drain as much gear oil as possible.
Another little tool I made for filling consisted of 1m of garden hose, a large funnel, jubilee clip, 3 cable ties, and bungee chord. This worked perfectly too.
In the 5th picture with the plugs, the one with all the metal filings, this is normal, I just cleaned this off and re-inserted with a tiny amount of copper grease on the threads.
Mine took 1.9L of new gear oil when the oil was dripping from the fill hole.
Old gear oil smells BTW
The 4th picture is irrelevant to the gearbox oil change, in fact its just a little tip, when changing the engine oil, I always prime the filter with fresh oil to aid start-up and circulation and to not let the internals get dry due to lack of oil.
Hope this is of help to you all.
All the Best, Chris
