When we hear stories of actual people being caught at mot time and failed for not having a cat present and functioning or stopped at the road side and probed up the tail pipe, those stories will be passed around as advice.
I have not heard or read anyone in the forums i frequent had this happen.
Plenty of decatted cars stil passing mots reported even after the last mot change recently.
Most forums start like will decat still pass mot, not is it legal.

Just a thought, AFAIK it isn't legal to install non-EC marked bulbs but how many of us run with LEDs?

Please, by all means go through the regular Government departments websites and internet searching if you so wish... Or... Pull over at a roadside VOSA checkpoint and ask the attending officer, they will only be too happy to inform you exactly where to obtain the information you require.

It's really not that difficult to understand, surely
No it's not difficult to understand at all. If there is relevant statutory law in the UK applying to this issue, then the relevant law can be cited.

What I don't understand is that, as an ex-VOSA member of staff, you seem unable to confirm or recite the terms of the enacted statutory law which substantiates your assertions.

If you can't do that, why are you bothering? Until I see the clauses of the Act of Parliament confirming what you say, I don't believe a word you say.

My only problem with the legalities or not of decatting is, having passed my MOT last year with no cats at all, my next problem would be a VOSA roadside check, which in a car I have never had, not sure how many people on here have?.
I also drive a van doing around 60k a year for the last ten years and in that time I have only had 2 VOSA stops, so ok its a risk I guess, but both of those stops were in a van that has illegally tinted front side windows (I knew that when I had them done) and it wasn't highlighted on either stop.
So I guess I'm saying I'll take my chances and if it happens then so be it!.

I carry a high vis jacket and a shovel in the boot of my car. Nobody questions a guy in a hi vis digging a hole...
