156 gearchange

Was fortunate to be given an mot failed 156 2.5 recently, - much welding later the car now has an mot cert and the car is great with the exeption of the gearchange, which is very stiff and hard work. I've no experience with 156's, is this common, can anyone point me in the right direction to repair this ?

Hi mate.... They either tend to go very stiff or very loose but it's essentially the same issue... Bushes and/ or plastic bracket broken in the selector.
Outside possibility, it could be the cables and gear box selector on top of the box itself seized or out of alignment. If you can actually get gears then that eliminates alignment.

Have a look at the top of this lounge at the "How to thread"
There is a very good tutorial on your possible issue that will take you through it, complete with photos and what parts you need and what to remove.

if it's just very stiff it's probably those bushes. it'll cost you about a fiver to fix, and an hr of your time, i expect. Did mine t'other week. This is them:

Have similar gear issues as described above, just bought a set of the bushes to see if that helps. Thanks for the advice!
