156 JTD oil change

a) is it straight forward (Im realising everything is not on this car!)...jacking up for example.. ramps too steep..etc.

b) does the plastic splash guard need to be there? (its cabled on, rather throw it away!)

Easy job you just need an 8mm Allan key and an extension bar (trolley jack handle is ideal) to crack the Sump plug off with. If you want to use ramps get the extra long run up ones as the 156 nose is rather long and will catch standard ramps. If you have a high enough lift on a large Trolley jack you can slide them under each side once the wheels are off the floor. The Oil Filter is behind a heat sheild held on by 2 13mm nuts which are actually easy enough to access so unlike some cars i've had in the past the jtd is a doddle.

Regarding the Undertay opinion is divided so I'll leave that up to you but it does keep out the muck and splashes from the engine bay,

I can easily remove the sump plug with the tray in situ.

I just drop the undertray on the front drivers side, enough to slide an old wok in under the oil filter position to lower the filter into when unscrewed and to catch the oil draining from the filter - keeps the under tray pristine!
