strange fob light sequence

I'm having a problem with my remote central locking, I searched on here but no one seems to have a similar fault.

When I first got the car I noticed the fob didn't always work first time you pressed the lock/unlock button (its a black two button fob) so the first thing I did was change the battery, this made no difference.

This is what normally happens when I press the lock/unlock button:

It either flashes slowly and unlocks the car or:
1. the red led doesn't initially flash when button pressed
2. on next press it flashes quickly
3. on next press it flashes slowly
4. on next press it flashes slowly and car locks/unlocks

However during 1-4 it might stop flashing and you have to start the whole sequence again.

I thought it could be a loose connection with the battery and I have tried to bend these through the battery hatch but this also has made no difference. At the moment I'm just locking the car with the key as if I can't get it unlocked I can't turn the alarm off!

Anyone any idea what it could be? The lock/unlock button is broken on my spare key so I can't try it.
