V6 water pipe seal replacement

Hello All.

I have a water leak on my 156 V6. I is causing a visible stream of water to run down the side of the engine, behind the cam belt cover. I have had a good look and believe the leak to be the end seals on the pipe that runs along the centre of the V between the thermostat and the pump(?). This is vindicated by the fact the bottom of the V is very wet at the end where the water is running down, and also that the system never completely drains.

Has anyone ever tried replacing the seals on the ends of this pipe? Can you please provide me with a breakdown of how to do it. I'm assuming that you need to remove the thermostat housing but it isn't immediately evident how to do it.

Many thanks

A word of caution, during the strip down of my V6 I found that the pipe can only be removed completely with both heads removed. With the engine in there's not enough room for it to slide out the side, it hits the inner wing.

If you remove the thermostat housing carefully, you might be able to change the 2 o-rings on that end of the pipe. Be worth changing the o-rings on the heads as well.

I could be wrong about removing the pipe but I couldn't get it out without taking the heads off.

If you look closely at this picture you can see where the pipe locates for reference.

Good luck.
