Alfa GT 2.0JTS Suspect Timing
About 9 months ago I had the cam belt changed on my 2.0GT JTS which had been running perfectly to this point. The change was done on age, the car has just done 30000 miles and is 6 years old with a full service history.
After being quoted about £1300 from the local main dealer to do this along with a service and a fix to the aircon I stupidly went to a local ‘specialist’ who did the same work for £700.
Straight away I felt the car was not running right, the idle seemed lumpy (almost oscillating), very low MPG between 13-18 (its never been great), and the fan cutting in almost straight away. So I took it back, and after about 1 hours testing they said there was nothing wrong. Still not convinced I took the car, cap in hand, to the local main dealer explained what I had done and asked if they would check. They had the car for a morning and said they could not find anything wrong with it, even though the service manager agreed it did not sound like it was idling right.
As I don’t use it much I thought may be I was being hyper sensitive to this issue but after a 50 mile run on the motorway yesterday when I used a quarter of a tank of fuel and with careful driving just managed to get 20MPG I thought something is definitely wrong. Sitting in traffic the idle still felt lumpy, and on occasion I got a hot almost curry smell – but walking round the car I could not be sure if that was actually coming from the car.
The car actually drives fine, it does not feel down on power, if anything it feels up on power!
So I am at a loss what to do, two separate garages have said there is nothing wrong. Does this sound like the cam belt has been put on wrong? I am very reluctant to take it back to the garage that performed the work as I have lost all faith in them and it has been 9 months! Help!!!!
