Yeah, they are weird, if they've been allowed to run out you need to put a good couple of gallons (10 litres) in to get the going again.... so pointless carrying a can in the boot for emergencies.....unless you put in in before running out I suppose.
My son's 1.8TS was sitting on a very slight downslope, I'd go out and fire it up now and again while he was out in Afghan, wouldn't start one day. Knowing it was low on fuel I put a gallon in...nothing. Another gallon and it fired straight away. I posted in here about the issue at the time.
Although I have to say it was showing no signs at all of starting, which is not the problem you describe.
