156 20v wobble
My cherished, even though I've only had it two months, 156 20v Sportwagon (2005) has a distinct wobble when driving between 18 & 20mph. It's been back to the dealer I bought it from but they couldn't establish anything wrong with it other than a CV joint which they replaced which didn't cure it.
My local south London Alfa specialists have now had the car and initially thought it was a drive shaft (common problem), but on having the car up on the ramp found them OK if a bit dry so have greased them up. However the problem persists. They noticed that one tyre in particular was very unevenly worn (inside tread). As all four tyres didn't have a huge amount of tread, I had them all replaced.
The tyre guys thought the worst one may have been be due to a buckled wheel but it balanced OK and they put it back on the car. Even now with four new boots it's still doing exactly the same thing. What's weird is that the shake is felt through the body of the car not through the steering wheel, suggesting the wheels are OK
I've had it suggested that it could be down to the fact that it's a five cylinder engine, which is inherently unbalanced. However the problem is definitely road speed not rev related. It doesn't matter if your in second or third or even in neutral with the clutch down it still happens. Stationary in neutral, you can take the engine up through the rev range and it's smooth all the way.
I'm dearly hoping that some wise AO will be able to come to my rescue as I live in a London borough with a 20mph speed limit so am in a state of continuous misery.
Thanks in advance.
