Check a Cam Belt

I have recently purchase a 2002 156 1.8 sporstwagon and was informed by the previous owner that the cam belt had been changed but he was unable to find the receipt. Is there any way I can visually check the cam belt as I do not want to spend unnecessary cash on having a new one fitted if it's not needed.

Not really,

You can often tell if a belt is really old due to the zebra pattern they often develop on the rear.

The trouble is, they often haven't developed this at the 36000 mile interval.
