Great that I found this forum. I've been reading a lot of post here the last two weeks and there seems to be a lot of good advice coming from Alfa owners, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
First of all, I'm a total noob regarding all things cars. I've had a Nissan Cherry 1.5 from the 80's and a Lancia Y 1.2 from 2001. I'm pretty fed up with the power and I seem to always get stuck behind trucks on the german highway with not enough acceleration to get out on the faster tracks.
For a week now I have been wondering if I should buy this Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 V6 from 1998 that I found used. It's been driven buy a 78 yo guy for the past many years, but I don't know anything about the previous owners.
It costs €1200 ($1600) and comes with a recent (yesterday) yearly check. Everything seems to be pretty much stock. I've driven it and it runs really well and it's really a bliss compared to my limited previous experiences.
I'm pretty much ready to buy, but two things worry me a bit. First off, the yearly check stated that the wheels had to be adjusted, which he did. I don't know what that means and the guy doesn't speak well english (I'm a dane living in Amsterdam, NL) and that's what I could understand from him. Are there any common problems regarding the wheels somehow?
The engine looks looks pretty much like many others I've seen on used car sites, but this (imgur: the simple image sharer
marked in red) part of the engine was wrapped with some white paper like fix. I was told it was nothing to be worried about.
Also there were some scratches below the front bumper on one side, which looks like it was caused while reversing and turning into a large stone. It's just visual though.
He says it doesn't use much oil which apparently can be a problem with some Alfas. I've checked around and I only found a small patch of rust under one of the doors (not the door itself but on the underside of the car). It's been driven close to 190.000 km (118.000 miles). Service book looks like it's been checked regularly (once a year). Dashboard lights work and no warnings. No problems with high RPMs.
Any advice is highly appreciated.
