Alfa 156 dilema 2001

hi guys looking for some advice.

i have a 2001 alfa 156, 62000 miles, runs fine, Mot'd in Dec 2012

it has knock to the boot and last week it backended a car which has creased the bonnet.

I have stupid excess as its my 1st car and the gent i hit has filed an insurance claim, not unreasonabily, so my premium will soar.

i think the cost of fixing the car to look like i would like it plus insurance will make it sadly somewhat impractical to keep.
the rear electic windows have never worked and there is a small rad leak that i planned to fix next week.

my dilema is that to do with it, private sale, trade in, breaker, (would be a shame as the mileage is so low and it runs well)

anyone any experience as to the best way to get the most for the car?

Really depends on how much damage there is to it.......there are plenty being broken, so second-hand parts could have it repaired pretty cheaply. Selling it as is would likely only fetch 200 - 300......

Keep away from your insurance company as they will certainly write it off.

This is a recurring and interesting point. As Rockhopper says - going via the insurance will kill it off. As rgwm says, depends on the damage.....and on what you're trying to achieve.

If you want it as it was, or better.....then it could be tricky (depending on damage). If you want it functional and MOT-able then it might be easier (depending on damage).

There's a point (and you know this by posting) when it's a case of good money after bad. You could break it yourself but it's a messy business and you need tools, space, time and space.

Assuming it's too much of a chew to fix, then a trade in is convenient, but you know it's not going to fetch owt.
