Intermittent red light in Rev. Counter

Alfa 156 2.5 V6 1999

I get occasionally red light in the Rev Counter lit up after number 8 on the dial ( 0 - 8 ).

It goes off and sometimes comes on. What does this mean please ?

That's the Engine Management Light - the equivalent of the "Motor Control System Failure" that owners of Facelift cars complain means that one of many sensors has reported an "out of range" value - intermittent in your case, it would appear. Only way to tell just what it is, is by getting the fault codes read, with something like MultiECUscan - or of course dealer diagnostics.

No point guessing what it is, really....but there's every chance that it isn't anything too important - I ran one of our 156s for about 18 months with it illuminated as it was reported as "cam sensor" - had little effect on running - certainly not enough to justify an early cambelt change.
