Idle and Hell
I am writing in hope that someone can help me, I am feeling pretty depressed. I have an Alfa 156 TS 2.0 Selespeed 2001 Monza edition and have owned it for 7 years now and until recently it has not skipped a beat, it is a seriously gorgeous car.... however about 6 months ago my happiness turned sour as a few things started to happen.
The first thing I noticed was that it would not accelerate or idle roughly when cold and it took a few revs gently increasing the accelerator over a few minutes before I could begin a journey. Then as I would be driving and coming to red light it would simply stop dead, no power steering etc, quite dangerous.
My first point of call was to take it to my local Alfa mechanic who gave it a good service, changed the brake rotors and a few other smaller items and handed it back to me with a warning of 'We tried to hook into the ECU but there was no signal from the ODB plug'.... so he was unable to diagnose the issue.
Feeling a bit freaked out about that I drove home and it actually drove a bit better... for a few days, then it was back to how it was. Eventually the injector light came on and after a bit of research realised the MAF need replacing, easy! I bought a new one, went through the ECU reset and all was well for a few more days before the idling issue returned.
I drove like this for another 3 months until the injector light came back on again. Frustrated I returned the new MAF and ordered a replacement which arrived a few days later and again it worked ok for a few days before returning to idle hell.
I decided to try and troubleshoot the not-so-talkative ECU issue and went through the torture of tracing wires from the ODB plug back to the ECU etc and that all seemed ok. I bought myself a USB OBD adapter and using fiatscan tried to get something but alas, nothing... I noticed that I could actually try and contact the separate ABS and Airbag ECU as well using FIATSCAN but again, nothing. I'm guessing there is a dodgy wire there somewhere, no idea which one to attack, very frustrating.
So without using some sort of ECU scanning it's a little hard to get anything of use and now my Alfa is even worse.
Now when I start the Alfa it doesn't idle, not unless I rev it slightly and slowly release the accelerator and then sometimes it seems to 'catch' and idle. If I am driving, and I come to a halt, it dies. I am guessing it is one of 3 things:
1: The pre-cat lambda sensor
2: The idle actuator
3: The ECU
If anyone has anyway of giving some sort of advice I would very much appreciate it, particularly if anyone knows what wires are required to get a reading out of the ECU from the ODB plug, I always thought it was only 3 but there are quite a few 'left over'...
Also , I live in Australia so getting parts is, well, not the cheapest and often import them from the UK (I am willing to wait the week it takes for delivery)
