Car doesn't like cold weather

Why does my Alfa GT (1.9 diesel) decide not to start whenever it goes into minus-figure temperatures.

I jump start it for a while, then eventually I get impatient and replace the battery (with a good Bosche)and that is fine, until next winter when it starts again.

I generally don't drive long journeys, but in the summer I could leave the car and come back and it will start no problem? Suggesting it' not a drain? Or is that still possible?

ps The AA guy tested it after it had been charging for 5 mins, and said the battery seemed fine, with very little drain.

How long do you let the plugs heat for? And when were they last changed?
