Not Happy To buy or not to buy that is the question?

My son has taken a fancy to a 147 which has failed its MOT with a failure for emissions, if he goes ahead what should he be checking first for a fix, what could be the problem and what would the likely cost be.

Lambda sensor or a problem with the catalitic converters..Hopefully!How many miles has the car done?If it's either of the above,it'd be fairly inexpensive..50 for the sensor plus fitting, the cats I'd buy used if it's a cheap car.If it's a high miler and the piston rings are worn it just means it's drinking oil and probably isn't worth fixing..Had a few cars and bikes like that!I would touch it without the seller sorting it out though.Good luck!

What were the emissions it failed on?

CO or hydrocarbons? Is the engine light on?

It could be anything from relatively cheap including leaking exhaust, lambda sensor, MAP sensor, failed CAT, leaking injector, blocked air filter, just needing a good service to much more expensive like worn rings or head gasket starting to fail.

Tell us what all the readings were both high and low rpm and what service history there is and we can direct you more clearly.

Lambda is a reasonable call but the reading will help.

Might be worth asking if he can read the fault codes before he hands over any money.

We could honestly do with more detail on the car...
Petrol or diesel, what engine capacity, what year, how many miles.... What did it fail on exactly and if you can, copy the read out that was given from the test centre... Until then, it's all irrelevant as it could be a myriad of possible faults
