My wifes car is a 2006 JTS Selespeed 156 with 80,000Km on it. Its a low milage car but gets used once a week for a 40km drive, with 5000 km occuring in one 4 day stint from Hobart to Darwin where we now live.
Last week while the car stopped in traffic with a warning to take the car back to the dealer and Ive not been able to start it since.
So my investigations have come up with the following:
Firstly, when I tried to start the car, the starter spins, but the solenoid doesnt throw the starter into the flywheel so it spins freely.
Secondly I noticed the selespeed gear light was flashing, and on investigation the selespeed oil was very low. It must have disappeared pretty rapidly as I check it once a month myself and its never moved. Being in Darwin I didnt imagine there would be any genuine oil, so I topped it up with a 100% synthetic Nulon ATF which has very close specification to the original, so I could get the car home.
The symptoms didnt change with he starter still not engaging, and the Selespeed light flashing. I am able to change gears from Reverse, First and Second with the ignition on and I can hear the gearbox meshing in each gear.
I towed the car home, and I then tried to reset the ECU (to reset the selespeed light) by
disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours. The battery is new and I recharged it, and used it to start our Pajero without any stress (as a test).
So Im pretty sure the gearbox selector has a problem, but my symptoms dont seem to match anything Ive found in this forum on a search.
Can anyone on here suggest a solution.
BTW this is my wifes favourite car of all time, and until I fix it Im never likely to get sex ....... so for my sake please help!
