156 Selespeed slipping into Neutral
Hello all, I'm a noob here, and also a Alfa Romeo noob too.
Just bought a '02 156 TS 2.0 16V - Selespeed.
It was just a small repair garage I bought it from, he had a couple of cars he had acquired and was selling on. 12 months MOT on it. The body, engine and interior are all great, and it only has 89k on the clock.
What the fella told me was that the warning light on the dash was to tell me the bonnet was up and was just a small problem. It turned out to be the gearbox warning light! To be honest it does look as though the warning light is a bonnet/boot symbol.
All the gears work fine, but for some reason it keeps slipping into Neutral every now and then. According to the manual, if we are getting that warning light and the beeping, it means the automatic doesn't work and only 2nd and 4th gears work using manual gears.
This morning in the middle of Manchester city centre, my wife was stuck at traffic lights because it wouldn't go into 1st gear after it slipped into Neutral. She had to switch the engine off and on again to get going, it did this 4 times she said.
Is it a big job? New gearbox or just adjustment?
I have ordered the modified cable from rarebear so I can have a go at fixing the problem myself through the diagnostic software. I am not a mechanic, but I am willing to have a go.
Your help is appreciated.
