147 wont restart when engine is warm

Hi I'm new here and also dont know too much about engines so please excuse any glaring errors!

People always used to say to me "alfa, haha unreliable blah blah blah" i always used to tell them where to go. having just changed the engine after finding a hole in cylinder 1 and finding a new problem i am starting to think there mockery was based on something.

my new problem is when i try and restart the engine after briefly stopping theres no joy. everything turns over fine but nothing beyond that. after waiting a short while if i give it a really good reving when turning over it groggyly comes back to life. the strange thing is when the engine is cold it starts up no problem. the temp guage has recently stopped working so i dont know if this is related.

any help would be massively appreciated

Temp gauge not working suggests that the temp sensor is defective. If the sensor is defective and not working the ECU will think the engine is cold when it is in fact hot. So the ECU thinks cold engine and throws excess fuel at it so it doesn't like starting when hot.

Another possibility is crank position sensor begining to fail. They often start to show signs of failure by not working correctly when hot.

I would fix the temp sensor / gauge first and move on from there.

If you have a set of leads and FES or know someone who does they can take live readings from the ECU of what the ECU thinks the engine temperature is.

If you can find a member near you you may get a live scan for a few beers!

An engine that won't start when warm, but will restart after 10 - 15 minutes and run for a while before cutting out is almost certainly a crank sensor problem....common and easily fixed problem - plenty of threads on here about it.......

Crank sensor, if not look at the box of relays as mine had melted.

Crank sensor, unless you are topping up the water regularly.
