Well Happy Help deciphering ecuscan graphs

Had been having issues with low fuel economy(avg:43mpg:85% motorway) & black smoke upon booting on my 1.9 8v JTD. Finally got an OBD cable and got some data off the ecu. Attached are the 2 files.

Run1 was to check boost pressures/egr working, first port of call. Drove through the city for a few minutes followed by a quick dual carriageway run. Surprisingly, desired vs actual boost is not that bad.
Whats confusing is the % EGR activity. It seems to be quite random. I thought the EGR shuts off after a certain RPM, or is it load etc dependent as well? There are scenarios with high rpm & 100% EGR activity, which certainly cant be good.

Run2 was just a few minute run around the local streets, i.e. no high revving. Again the graph shows high EGR activity (Active/Non Active). Also, what are your thoughts on the MAF voltage data? At idle, it wasnt steady, quite erratic.

Can someone shed some light on these graphs? & possibly suggest a few other important parameters that I could log to decipher the issues ( tooo many parameters !! excellent software)

On the + side, the engine temp which I thought was 70 on the gauge is actually 84degrees.
