In the process of changing my oil pump
Thought I'd share with you all a few thoughts on changing the 1.9 jtd engine oil pump.
If your oil pressure warning light is slow to extinguish from a cold start, if it starts becoming slow to extinguish when engine is warm, if it so much as flickers whilst driving and in particular....right turns, roundabouts, tight bends etc then it it time to replace it.
I had all the above which were begining to show every sign of worsening, so first off... a very big thanks to Bap for shipping over to me a brand new oil pump saving me a €100+.
Lot of stripping out to do, aux belt, timing belt and associated tensioners and guide pulleys, PAS pump pulley off, PAS pump bolts released and pump eased back, release alternator and ease back toward bulkhead, remove PAS pump support bracket, remove crankshaft drive gear (left hand thread and wickedly tight!), remove exhaust, remove sump, disconnect oil cooler pipes, take weight of the engine (I used a transmission jack), remove engine mount (on the front left as view from the front of car), remove oil pump. Reassembly is pretty much the reverse etc.
After examing the oil pump it was very clear why I had a hard time from the pesky little warning light. The back plate on the pump is retained by five (5) screws. They were all loose! Oil was leaking past the pump resulting in low pressure.
Before fitting the new pump I removed one screw at a time, applied thread lock and refitted making sure that all were equally tightend to 15Nm.
I have attached a few pictures (taken on my phone hence the poor quality) of the old pump in place and on the deck after removal.
Something to think about....my engine gets fresh oil and filter every 7000 miles, the engine is never thrashed and I always allow it to warm up before enjoying it. Car has 109264 miles upon it. In my opinion, this could be a serious problem that if not resolved quickly could result in major engine damage/seizure. Jtd owners be aware.
