transmission issue

hi guys.
apologies, i know im just new here, but i do need a little info, and here seems to be the best place.
I have recently bought an alfa 2002 156 monza selespeed.
my issue is that for the first 2 days, the gears would regularly slip back into neutral, especially when idling. wasn't really an issue, so i kept driving. however, within 2 days, i got this little red fuel injector looking symbol on the dash, then can no longer get the gears out of neutral.
I took it back to the mechanic, who tries to quote me that the oil isnt right, and therefore the pressure is failing.
his take on it, is that it just needs to be changed and flushed, then it would be all good. However on calling round, i get different opinions form different mechanics. one says the actuator needs changing, another, the whole gearbox.
Anyone else here can shed some light??
