Just got home, Flat bed style. Can't knock the call out time and I reckon I just got my call to the RAC in on time as it's flooded in so many places around here. When we were driving back the driver said him and his mates were getting loads of calls for cars stuck in floods.
So I just put my little scanner on the car as I eventually got an engine management light. Code is PO335 (10) CRankshaft position A circuit. So Steve it appears your reply does apply to me. Amazes me that the RAC didn't bother to put a fault code reader on, unless i didn't have a warning light hen he looked.
Thanks everyone for your speedy and accurate diagnosis, we've got our own little Alfa urgent breakdown helpline on this forum ey! My Kids were pretty upset that Alfie was ill, so was I, we've had over 7 years breakdown free barring a power steering pump.
The Net search now begins of how to change crankshaft sensor on 1.8 ts.
