A while back when my village speed limit changed from 40 to 30mph , I'd just sold my manual 4.2lt L Cruiser and bought a 3lt L Cruiser auto which was so quiet compaired to the 4.2 . I was caught at 34mph by a van in the layby just 100 yds before the limit off sign . That cost me £60 and 3 points then about a month later tootling along the same patch of road , got caught again at 37mph . The memory of our village always having been 40mph seemed to be automatically burnt into my head. This got me an offer to attend a 'police course' which I did , same cost but no points.
I like driving fast but had not always obeyed the 30mph limits , especially at night if no traffic or people were out and about BUT after this course I can honestly say that now I do , regardless of circumstances . WHAT MADE ME PAY ATTENTION ? Lots was said on this course but the key point to grab my attention was that if someone was killed by me in a 30mph limit and I was doing 30mph or less ---- it would be a court case obviously but if not negligent then I'd keep my liberty ------ BUT if doing 31mph or more I'd end up in prison !!!!
So although the course gave plenty of other good reasons not to speed through limits , it was this reality that stopped me in my tracks.
I have fun in my sprint car on track which tends to calm my tendency to speed in the road car !!!
