jtd fuel filter

A mate is looking at changing the fuel filter on his jtd (Fiat Doblo ) and is wondering if you need to either bleed the fuel system of pre-fill the filter to avoid air locks (as is traditional with diesel engines). Or is it just a simple matter of putting the new filter on and then it sorts itself out - my 145/6 manual seems to suggest the latter, I'd just like a second opinion

Re: jtd fuel filter

My understanding is that they self bleed...but don't take my word for it as I once saw a dealer mechanic struggling to start a Punto after it ran dry!

Re: jtd fuel filter

Recently tried changing mine, not a problem to do but the one I had was not the right size. With the Alfa 156 JTD you need to remove the existing drain trap/electrical connector and fit it to the new one. As far as starting the car again, just switch on ignition, wait a few seconds for the fuel to purge then start.
PS Try not to spill too much diesel in the engine bay, it takes about a week for the smell to go through the air vents!
