Alfa 156 2.5

Hi boys, my 156 has developed a rattling noise when I put the car in reverse and depess the throttle slightly the noise appears to be coming from beneath the central console area behind the gear stick and it doesnt happen when any other gear is engaged nor when the car freewheels backwards. Any ideas what this noise could be? It sounds like a rattle or tapping noise just as the throttle is depressed and as the car moves back it lessens or disappears. As far as I know the gearbox is much further forward than the origin of the noise. Your advice would be really appreciated as I've got a torn knee cartilage and dont know whether its driveable safely and I dont want to do serious damage. Thanks
