I normally lurk around the GTA lounge and don't venture over here often but would value your opinions.
I'm imminently looking to change job to one where i'll need a cheap but presentable diesel which can muster good mpg. I have looked at what is on offer and general focus/modeo sized cars with 1.9 Diesel engines seem to tick the boxes.
At the moment the Saab 93 or a mondeo look like the best value, possibly even a Vectra or signum. however, I do like my Alfas and my GTA served me well when I last used a car for work. Questions:
Are the engines and turbos reliable? Am I safe looking at cars with 100,000 and 150,000 miles? It is a GM engine isn't it?
Are the suspension bits fairly strong? My GTA doesn't do much mileage so I have yet to do much other than wishbones.
Electrics- are they fairly typical of similar era Alfas?
Could I reasonably expect to get 50mpg in mixed driving?
I'm probably only going to spend between £1-2k so if anyone can suggest something better in that bracket please do
