Okay I am still pretty new to this so please don’t get too annoyed with me or shoot me down if I ask questions that have already been asked previosuly. I have used the search button and found some really useful stuff but also I think I need some reassurance and advice from you experienced Alfa owners!!
I own a 03 reg 156 1.8TS. I did have a brand new 147 but swapped it for the 156 – baby is here!! I bought it with approx 6,500 miles on it but the speedo was replaced because of the fuel gauge issue (I know about this problem) and the miles now read 9,500 all put on be me – so total approx 16000 miles. It is due a service in August and will probably have another 3000 miles on it by then, so al-in-all 19000. I am careful to watch the oil levels (currently using Castrol 10w/40 is this okay, couldn’t source any Selenia, any sugggestions where to but please?) and do check every 1500 miles, (probably should be more frequent, but the engine doesn’t seem to be using as much oil as some people have reported here).
The car has a few rattles (glove box area, not what is in there however) but nothing I can’t handle. Occassionally and only after I have washed it when I release the handbrake and pull off the car ‘sticks’ and makes a loud ‘groan’ as it moves away??? It is like the brakes are on as I try to move away. Anyone heard of this before? The ‘groan’ comes from the rear – brakes/suspension?
Engine sounds okay, but occassionally sounds a little ‘rattley’ on start up and car idles at about 800-1000rpm. Is this normal from anyone elses experience?
Question: What should I look out for engine wise at this stage of the cars life? I have read the stories about the cam belts and tensioners but am I okay until next years service before I replace these? Refil for the air-con?
What should I expect from the sevice at this stage, anything major? I have used Mangolestsi for servicing and I bought my 147 and 156 from there – they are okay but maybe it is all dealers but I don’t always believe them. How does Caladonia in Warrington rate anyone? Is there anywhere else near Warrington/Runcorn?
I got the car fitted with 17’ Supersports (my wife liked them, but so do I) and Pirelli P-Nero tyres.
Question: What pressures should I ideally run front and rear and does anyone have experience with these tyres and wear rates, longevity? I do about 1000 miles a month, so far tyres look okay, more wear noticed in inside edge of fronts but rears okay – is it worth swapping front and rears? Michelins seem to be a good compromise on grip and wear from what I have read?
I love the car, it handles like a dream and the power is enough for now for me. I will be keeping it for another 3 years I guess.
All help and advice is gratefully received or just point me to the right thread and I will go there.
Thanks in advance
