Haven't had your point 1, but 2, yes. About 10 times, once nearly demolished a wall.
This usually happened within a mile or so of a cold start (whatever the weather). I'd be turning at low speed (always in first or second) and the steering would 'lock' and the engine would almost stall.
My diagnosis was that the power steering pump was locking and the belt was stopping the engine. Bishops in Guildford liked that theory, but when it was finally sorted I was told that the selespeed had been adjusted. Never really been sure why that would cause it, but it's never done it since.
Take it down to Bishops, they are a nice bunch.
