Thanks for that, yes we bought a 2nd hand pump with the ECU attached, I have the OBD Scan cable and have just ordered the adaptor leads you suggested from ebay, I'll let you know how it goes!!
Be sure your OBD lead is the correct type, including the version(see the multiecuscan site I listed earlier for more details), or it might not work.
The reason you may have had problems reading the codes in the past could be because you weren't using the adapter leads, without them you wont read the ABS codes, you'll only have access to the engine diagnostics.
Sometimes setting the com ports on your laptop can be a bit of a pain! So if your not good with computers you might need a bit of a hand with that. The multiecuscan software is great, and I'm pretty sure you can test the com port setting with it.
You can download multiecuscan as soon as you want. Then you can get it set-up using your obd lead, as you can access the engine diagnostics without the adapter leads. That way you'll know that you have it functioning correctly when the leads arrive.
