Cam belt change

I have read on your site that when you do the cam belt it is also advisable to do the tensioners and also the water pump. I have an alfa 147 twinspark and am not sure when the above was last done, would someone be kind enough to let me know what parts are required as I have to order them from ebspares and as I come from Australia I want to make sure I only have to make one order. I am prepared to do what ever has to be done, so I no where I am with the car as I have only had it a month and are very happy with it.

Hi there. You need a full cambelt kit/waterpump/counter balance tensioner/belt and if your 147 sounds like a diesel on start up you will require a variator as well also you will require the cam locking tools if you do not have these. The auxcillary belt/tensioner/idler may be changed at this time if required as you have to take these off anyway to do the cambelt. Also i would advise a new cambox gasket. What engine do you have?
Timing belt w/ tenioner/idlers
Variator/repair kit if you get the diesel sound
Variator half shells if replacing the above
Rocker Cover Gasket
Camshaft gaskets
Variator half shells
Water pump (Recommended)
Coolant if the above is done
Aux belt if the old one is cracking/ageing
Locking tools if your doing it yourself or the garage doesnt have the tools
DTI Guage, TDC Indicator attachment as above.
Service w/ spark plugs (may aswell do it all at once )
Purely up to you if you want to do some bits, just getting the timing kit and water pump will suffice for most.

Edit: bit pointless now

The waterpump is not as critical on the TS as on the diesel which should be every 40k. Usually the last to 100k plus but to be safe if its on 72,000 miles then it's worth changing. Variator too at this time as they usually don't last to the next belt change.

Out of interest How long do variators actually last?
I changed mine anyway (as it came with the 2.0L Camshafts) but my last one was working perfectly and that had 50k on I changed it.

They can last a long time but generally its around the 100k mark

Shame they never put a phase variator on the Exhaust side too.
Could have made the last 2-3K rev's really lively with even better torque figures for the little TS engine.

Still I guess it was phased out when the JTS came along.

My variatore is on 120,000m (200,000 kms) and only lightly dieselly.

If you keep the engine oil at Max, and in good condition then the legend is that the variator lasts longer. I didn't have the beast from new.. but my '45 doesn't burn or lose any oil at all between changes (I know.. something wrong with it! ) so it's probably always had oil at or near the Max mark... so maybe there's something in it?

Variator on my lusso has lasted 70k and sounds awful. Doesnt help that its drinking the halfords engine oil like water at the moment. fuchs titan will be going in it on the weekend.
