When did Borg and Beck become Valeo?

Hi everyone

I've just purchased a 'Borg and Beck' clutch from a reputable supplier on the bay, yeah, they

do exist!!

On opening the box,all the components are Valeo??

They look genuine, too.Well finished, well made and just like other valeo kits I've seen!

Just a question, tho,I thought 'Borg and Beck' were now under the 'firstline' banner, not Valeo!

I've sent the seller a question,but not had a reply yet(only sent it today,tho!)

Anyone out there got any ideas as to why a valeo clutch kit is in a 'b and b' box and at a 'b

and b' price?

Did Borg and Beck use other peoples components in their kits, before the takeover?

I'm not complaining, just curious to know if anyone else can shed some light on this!

I don't know if this is the case here, but it's not uncommon for aftermarket parts to be bought in from another manufacturer. In a market where a particular vehicle is only a small seller it's not worth tooling up to manufacture parts, so they will be bought in from an aftermarket manufacturer in the vehicle's home market or from the OE supplier.

Hi Dave, that makes sense. It is a clutch for the 3.2 GTA so wouldn't be a huge seller I wouldn't have thought.

Thanks for that. The suspicious side of my nature did wonder whether it was stolen and re boxed!

Having said that the seller is a reputable,business seller,so unlikely . . . . . but I did wonder . .

However your suggestion makes much more sense!

I once bought a LUK clutch kit for my Fiat coupe.

On opening the box, that was also a Valeo item.

I didn't mind though as I paid £150 for it, the Valeo one in the Valeo box would have cost £225

I've just had a response from the seller and his answer was exactly as Dave had suggested!

The cheapest Valeo version I had found was 160!

I paid less than 140 for it,so a veritable bargain!I find it hard to believe just how expensive those Valeo

boxes are,tho!!

Thanks for the replies!

Service-replacement parts are big business and after market suppliers are almost forced to offer a full range of parts even though they do not have the basic part in original equipment (OE) production. OE inevitably pays for the tooling costs and with the competitive nature of the market, the low and unpredictable volumes do not make tooling for the replacement market profitable.

So Valeo get good business on a B+B bulk buy. B+B make a nice profit for just repackaging and distribution. Everybody is happy (the service-replacement mark up easily absorbs a £20 difference). OE cost is about £35 total I would say!

'A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits. They will be embarrassingly large.' - Henry Ford.

Looking at it that way,Sunbar, not such a veritable bargain!

I can believe the mark up figures,as an example the trade price of an oil filter, through Halfrauds,is less than 2

quid, even at that they are still making a profit, yet full retail is nearer 7 or 8!!

Sometimes feels like we are getting ripped off . . . . . .
