Re: 159 roadtest in Autocar...
The article is indeed very enthusiastic, but there are two tell tales that Scudetto is spot on.
1. The article is written by Steve Cropley, who likes Alfas - he even went against the corporate line and gave a very positive review of a V6 spider a few years back, which is like farting in a lift at Autocrap.
2. The final paragraph is blatant wiggle room - "A proper Autocar decision will have to await a head to head comparison of the top class protagonists". Which is of course a perfectly reasonable statement, if we didn't know from past experience what is coming.
Once Sutcliffe (is he paid by BMW or just spawn of the Devil?) and co. get involved it will, of course, turn out that the Alfa is inferior to the 3 series even if it is better looking, faster, better handling, better riding, better equipped.... etc.
Even if by some miracle it does get decent reviews now, it will nevertheless be excluded from comparison tests whenever anything else new enters the class, and after a couple of years history will quietly be revised so that it will be clear that it was never a contender in the first place.
The sad thing is that a lot of people will read it and take it as gospel - a colleague of mine who cares little for cars has just ordered a 320d on the basis that Autocrap said it was the best in the class and he dind't fancy test driving any alternatives
