OK, got the crank sensor changed and starting issue resolved. Feel like my Bella is close to full health, but hurdles remain and I'd love to throw a bit more money at her to ensure some hopefully trouble free motoring for a while!!
Issues appearing at random.....
Off the motorway, onto bumpy road, turn round the corner, suddenly I'm told that I'm in R... not really thankfully as I'm doing 70kph. No gears (except R), so I pull over, hazards on, holy crap I'm now blocking one lane of an ultra busy road, the F3 freeway exit into Sydney. Restart, no go, battery unplug 10 mins, no go. Jiggle all cabling etc etc along the way. For no obvious reason, one of the starts, she's all good and drives normally the rest of the morning.
Next day, morning cold start... reverse out of driveway, into first, 1 is flashing... drive off, changes to 2, 2 is flashing. pull over, cursing a bit. Restart, same deal, fluid level normal, pump working fine (7 second prime). Another start, same again, so I drive a bit, mmm it's changing normally, even though 1 and 2 are flashing when pulling away. 3,4,5 are not flashing and it's changing up and down fine, and no flashing when going 3,2,1 in that order. Get home after that short train station run, flashing stopped after a while, next trips that day are all normal.
I've had niggles like that off and on for the past few months. I'm suspecting the selespeed relay as one culprit, as it was loose one time a while ago (nearly falling out in fact) and the flashing gears started. Pulled over, finally noticed it falling loose, pushed it back in (not all the way, seems about 3-4mm out of a full clean join), all good again! Apparently it controls the pump?? So pump was losing pressure hence flashing?
I've put the car on my AlfaDiag previously, but not since the last couple of specific issues as described. No errors were showing, but I will put it on again tomorrow and have a look at any SS error codes. But when it works, the car is running near perfect. Touch of kangaroo start in 1 when cold , brakes shudder a bit when travelling v.slow. Actuator changed 5 yrs ago, new clutch & battery 2 years ago, regular oil changes etc. Pump pressure normal, clutch rod length 28.5 spot on etc.
OK, enough... cut to the chase. I'm due for another timing belt change ($$ gulp), and want to replace the selespeed relay too. Car has done 127000kms, I bought it at 69000 and changed belt soon after.
What else would you recommend (on a reasonable budget) that I change in terms of sensors/electronics in order to best ensure I've eliminated these kind of issues?? Thinking I'll get some electrical contact cleaner and give the main wiring loom a good going over? What about pf2c sensor? Negative earth connector? What would YOU legends do?
So after some nervous unreliable moments, I want to throw a few extra hundred at general electronic maintenance, but would appreciate your advice as where to best direct it....
Cheers as always
