147 2.0 Head gasket costs?????
My Alfa 147 2.0 has had a minor intermittent overheating issue which I thought could have been down to a faulty thermostat. The temp sits at about 88 degrees, then starts to push up, I put the heater on full and the temp drops to 90 again. A few times it has maxed out for about 15 seconds, then dropped down to 90 again.
Yesterday however, it overheated to 130 and didn't drop so I coasted to a garage and topped the water up. It took quite a bit to fill it up. The temp dropped so I drove slowly home. The temp after that stayed at 90.
Today, I drove to work (18 miles) and the temp stayed at about 60-70, but coming home, the temp shot up and didn't cool down so I called the AA out and they spotted a crack in the bottom water hose going from the radiator to the engine. They also said that the head gasket has gone, so they towed me home
There is no bubbly oil under the oil cap that I would expect to see, but they tend to know what they are talking about.
Within the past 6 months, I have had the Cam belt changed twice. Once for 'Just in case', and the other because Oil had leaked on it. I also had the water pump done. John @ MVC has told me that the engine had been swapped out at some point. There is an oily residue in the water reservoir but that has always been there, so I am hoping that is a symptom of why the engine was swapped in the 1st place.
My question is what are the worst case and bast case costings to have the head gasket done?
I know that it depends on the skimming etc, but i need to know the ball park that i will be looking at?
Also is it better to replace the engine?
Is it the head gasket?
I will be taking it to John @ MVC in Sale, so I know it will be done properly.
I am going on Holiday in 2 weeks, I need this done, but money is tight because of the holiday.
Any help would be appreciated.
