Alfa Romeo 156 fuel warning light

I've recently purchased a 2005 156 2.4 20v JTD. I absolutely love i....
However as I'm new to Alfas I have a few questions that hopefully someone
Might be able to answer.

Firstly the fuel gauge appears to be a little strange to say the least.
When I start the car the little orange light comes on and the gauge moves.
However even with the gauge touching the red line and the limited range
Warning on, the orange low fuel light does not come on. Any ideas what
Might be wrong or is it normal operation?

Secondly the trip computer itself is I think lying to me! It says 57.7mpg but I reckon
I'm only doing about 40ish. Again is this a normal inacurracy or do I
have a fault????

Alfa 156 fuel gauges are notorious for being 156TS would read empty/warning lamp if parked on a slope, even if it was full.

My 150 JTDM computer also reads at least 5 mpg, and I have read other threads on here which would seem to concur. I always brim the tank and calculate the mpg manually, which is currently averaging 43mpg.

Thanks for replies, was just a little concerned i might end up stranded on the M6 or somewhere having run out of fuel while waiting for the light to come on before i put more diesel in!

If the motor has been remapped then the computer MPG accuracy goes out the window - best to brim fill the tank each time and calculate it yourself as PRJ suggests.

I think that the warning light is supposed to come on when you get down to the last 3 litres (approx).

Once you get used to how far a tank full gets you then just use the trip meter as a warning system.

Alfa Romeo 156

I have the same problem. Car 1.9JTD 16v, yellow light turns on when I start the engine (so the bulb is ok) but it doesn't turn on when the fuel reserve gets really low. It did before, now I get ---- on the bord computer and the light is still not turning on. The car is not remapped or anything, could it be the fuel sender unit?
