At 10k I reckon you're about £35/month down on fuel but being the 1.6 you probably see a good chunk of that back in tax and insurance, plus it's cheaper in the first place.
Very true, I'd probably see an extra £30-£40 a month in my back pocket with the comparable 1.9 JTD 120hp. (Same engine I had in my punto and that would do 53mpg round town and that was booting most of the time).
It was a bit mental in a punto though because it was a light car with a huge diesel lump in the front. My 1.2 8v punto would out handle it when pushed. But for straight line speed once it was chipped it suprised much larger faster cars. Roughly 8ish seconds to 60mph.
But the Alfa although much slower. Costs more to run. its a nice place to be. I dont mind pootling along or not being the fastest thing on the road. Its a bit strange.
Or maybe I'm getting old.
I'm also much more comfortable doing my own work on a N/a petrol. Another reason for me buying one. There easier and cheaper for servicing (if you do it yourself).
But Fiat / Alfa GM have really made decent improvements in diesels in the last 10 years.
Now they have transfered alot of those findings over to petrol engines.
Twinair etc, As well as the 1248cc Diesel 16v engine. Thats now in the Mito / Fiat 500 / Fiat puntos etc... Really strong diesel engine 90hp and loads of torque.
The end of the day the diesel offers on paper more power and economy and similar servicing cost. Even buying them second hand their a bargain.
But for me...
I couldnt have my first alfa as a diesel. I didn't do that many miles to warrent it. An to be honest. I am very happy with it and the Marquee.
The only issue I have is with myself not doing it sooner.
