Any of them actually owned a modern Alfa?
The classic quote from people who have never even been in, let alone owned an Alfa.
I was told the same by two mates who when I bought my 51 plate 2.0 147.
One had bought a 56 plate BMW 520D
The other a 54 Plate Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTI.
After the first year of ownership, I had spent (other than oil and petrol) the grand total of 85 quid. I bought a Strut Brace.
Mr BMW had spent 4 grand!
New injectors and a new clutch. (his car had done 30k less than mine!)
Mr Celica. 600 quid on sorting the electrics as the windows wouldn't go up and down as they should (down to a water leak).
300 quid on a new exhaust part (mate never said what had gone wrong).
And the final outlay. 1600 quid on a new brake system over haul as the whole thing just decided to pack up and lock on. Or seize as I put it.
Oh the embarrassment of the German and Japanese efficiency being worse than Italian quirkiness!
Even after these, they still think Alfa's are unreliable!
