Cry Like A Baby Possible cracked sump

Just took the undertray off to try and track the source of the oil leak that's been bugging me for the last couple of weeks. The oil was dripping from the underside of the sump, so I cleaned this up and had a pleasant ten minutes lying under the car waiting to see what happened.

Slowly but surely a line of oil started to form, coming from halfway up the rear of the sump where it sort of forms a shelf. Naturally, this being an Alfa, it is impossible to see exactly where the oil stems from, but there are no joins, seals or gaskets in that part of the sump for the oil to leak from.

I'm therefore starting to think that one of the many speedramps in this jeck of the woods has done for my sump. The oh so virtuous butt-munchers at the local council will, naturally, deny any responsibility.

If it is the sump it looks like it is bolted to the gearbox in a couple of places. So a nice cheap job then

Anyone had their sump replaced and if so, any idea on costs? If it's going to run to four figures I can see myself heading to a local dealership for a part-ex deal on something mundane and cheap to repair.

Bringing madness to an Off-road near you.

Alfaless, but mia cuore sportivo keeps beating.

Re: Possible cracked sump

This seems most peculiar . You'd think if you'd given the sump enough of a clout to crack it, being aluminium, a lump would have fallen off, leaving a big hole. On the other hand, if you have a porous casting or summat, why has it started leaking now?

Re: Possible cracked sump

I have seen cracked 156 sumps that are just cracked with no lumps missing.

A complete new sump is about 100.

If your sump has the bridging piece running under the exhaust REMOVE IT.
That bridging piece hits the ground first.

Re: Possible cracked sump

I had a look on the workshop manual and it doesn`t look so bad a job, providing you have a four-post lift od course.

You local specialist should eb able to give you a sensible quote - I *guess* 2 hours to replace.

Re: Possible cracked sump

Yup it has the bridge piece. More torque you see, needs the ironwork...... There are some scrapes on the bottom of the sump on the fins but not the bridge. Go figure

There's a possibility that the leak is where the bellhousing for the gearbox joins the sump but my money is on the sump. Either way, not fun. I'm losing about a tablespoon of oil each night.

Thank for rummaging on the service CD Chris, I haven't installed it on my laptop yet and my desktop is buried in my daughter's room at the moment.

Maybe not so bad then?

Re: Possible cracked sump

Nooooo I'm being used as a reference of folly!
It was too sunny to be under me car at the weekend

I'll get around to it soon . I'll probably do a mixture of trying to swap it quickly - but with a container to catch the oil.
