I've just bought a 'new' 57 plate Alfa 147
Unfortunately, it's giving me some problems
On cold mornings, when there's condensation on the windscreen, the windscreen wipers start as soon as the ignition is turned. They continue to operate as if you had set the stalk to continuous wipe. Turning the stalk to intermittent has no effect. Turning the stalk to fast wipe sets them to fast wipe. Returning the stalk to the static position has no effect. They continue to wipe.
It appears as if the car can't see when the wipers at the rest position. Once the engine has been started, more often than not they'll stop. But not always. Sometimes they continue for 30 seconds to a minute. Who knows how long they'll stay on for once the temperature drops!
The problem does not occur anywhen else.
I thought perhaps it was a problem with the motor assembly and attempted to clean the tracks; and have now replaced the whole lot with a brand new motor/linkage assembly. Unfortunately, this morning, the problem continued.
Thus far, the only fix I have found is to take the fuse out. But this isn't really practical.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Does anyone know, at rest, does the ECU expect to see a closed or open circuit?
I'd really like to get this sorted before we get a frost and the motor burns itself out trying to free stuck wiper blades.
