147 turns over, won't start. Where do I start??
Hi everyone, love this amazing Alfa resource. I had a search around, and found some pointers, but would appreciate any more advice!
Sometimes, without warning, maybe one time out of 20 or 30 starts, the car suddenly decides it will turn over normally, but never actually start. So I unplug the battery terminal, wait at least 10 minutes, plug it back in, and it starts every time. Then it runs just fine (although pre-cats rattle on cold start, different issue). The pump primes normally, battery and key fob battery are fine.
Only other issue is possibly related.... I've had a couple of selespeed issues over the past six months, flashing gear numbers, will only drive in 1st and/or reverse. All fixed with the battery disconnect routine or once by topping up a small amount of fluid. I also pushed the chunky square selespeed relay (pump relay?) in further when I noticed it working it's way loose, which fixed another issue. A few days ago I got a scary Motor Control System Failure when starting up. Reversed out the driveway, car still drove OK a few metres, but I pulled over and turned off. Restarted after a minute (didn't touch the battery), no issues or msg, drove off just fine. So niggly issues here and there, which all look scary and expensive at the time (my poor nerves), but are easily and cheaply fixed. My trusty spanner now lives in the car!
For the starting issue, I will pay more attention to the dash next time, as can't be 100%, but I'm fairly sure that there are no warning lights, immobiliser lights, there is certainly no beeping or msg displayed.
I'm suspecting that the wiring/contacts need a good check and clean, maybe fuses, relays etc? I saw a thread that mentioned the transponder ring? Immobiliser? Crank sensor? Seems to happen mostly during the day, i.e not the first start of the day, but I have a feeling it has done it when cold in the past, so not 100% on that clue.
I have a good local Alfa mechanic, but he's a bit vague on the suspect part in this case. I could try some basic stuff myself, but would ideally like to take it to him and say 'right, please replace this, this, this and check and clean this this and this'. Where would you guys start? Or what could I try next time it happens? (other than the battery thing). I do have Alfadiag, but it never seems to happen at home and my laptop only works on power! (Would disconnecting the battery clear any fault codes anyway?)
Any and all advice greatly appreciated from the Alfalegends!!
