How much for diagnostics is fair ?

got quoted 55 for diagnostics today... Thought that was steep or am I just being tight ? Thing is I'd expect someone to actually give me something for 55 not just plug my car into a computer. Do the garages usually knock off the diagnostics if you have the work done there ?

Minimum hours labour charge I would have thought.

Buy the software and a lead and do it yourself?

30 + is normal starting rate for them to plug the car in . Cheaper to buy the lead and download Multiscan free version ( paid for version is 50 I think ) so if you have to use it twice its paid for itself anyway

That sounds like an hourly rate to me - I'd have thought for your 55 you get the car plugged in and the codes read and then the remainder of that hour with a technician checking the vehicle to work out what needs to be replaced.

Or 55 to plug it in and give you a list of codes and more to actually tell you what is really wrong ... (that was a Peugeot dealer's offer by the way and the hourly rates was 85!!!)
