Would be well worth your while trying a flushing oil followed by an oil and filter change. The variator rattle is caused by either a worn variator or low oil supply (not always the same as low oil level). If the oil feed channels are partially blocked you will get the dreaded diesel sound.
If this doesn't do it I wouldn't be happy changing the belt and variator without doing the tensioner too. Although unlikely to fail, how would you feel if it did go and you hadn't changed it, for the sake of a few £$£$?
Also worth a quick visual inspection of the water pump. If there are signs of leakage (usually white traces around the bearing) then change it. If the water pump siezes the belt will throw and you're up for a new engine.
