156 Veloce Breakdown Cam Belt Failure?
I have a 156 2.0 Veloce X reg. 37,000 miles. Today I was driving at about 20mph and there was a terrible noise from the engine. Sounded like clunk. clunk. clunk. I could even feel these clunks through the steering wheel. I dipped the clutch straight away but when I realised it wasnt a running gear issue, I turned the Ignition off and coasted into a side road. When I was stopped, I perhaps foolishly turned the ignition again. The engine fired but made the same terrible noises. I turned it off straight away. The AA man opened the cam belt cover (I think...on the left side of the engine as you look at it from the front of the car) and although I could see an intact belt, he said there was something clicking when he pushed the car in gear. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened? The car is at a local garage but they dont open until Monday. I'm worried it might be something terminal or more costly to fix that the car's worth. ANY ideas re. problem and likely cost of repair would be gratefully recieved!
