Help needed - 156 aircon pump issue - costly repair ?
Please can anyone assist on this.
I have a 156 - 2001 - 1.8.
The air con hasn't worked for about 6 months but its not something Im that bothered about to be honest.
A few weeks ago some white smoke began coming out of the end of large unit at the very bottom of the pulley system. It also smelled a bit of burning rubber/plastic a bit.
It also started making a kind of dry, grinding noise when first started.
I took it to the alfa/fiat speciaist near here (JC's - used to be smallbrook garage leigh) who always fix it and they said it was the aircon pump burned out. They said it was part of the whole pulley system including the alternator etc. (the belts were all changed 15,000 miles ago and all seem fine). They did somethign which stopped it at first.
It stopped doing it for a week or so - but has started it again - that loud dry grinding sound at start up and after 10 mins of driving the smell and some smoke appears again.
Ive been told it will be between 600 and 800 quid to repalce and fit this part - its money i simply havnt got.
Im not bothered about the aircon working or not and just want the car to run.
Can any of you guys please help diagnose it if this isnt it - and if it is or not advise of any cheaper ways / options of me getting the problem fixed and me just back driving asap. As i said im not bothered about the aircon - just want it back on the road quiet and not smoking.
Apart from that issue its driving fine, smooth and not overheating or anything.
Many thanks for any assistance.
