We see quite a lot of DMFs with lateral play in them, probably half of them or so, maybe a little less. Sometimes its very minor and you could get away with not changing it as long as you didn't mind a little bit of judderyness. Sometimes its really bad.
I know what you're saying about "low-pass filter", thats a very good way of describing it. I guess it is - in the same way that a sprung clutch plate will have the same effect but to a lesser degree. We really don't know if in the long term it will cause damage to the drivetrain. We can only say that on the cars we've fitted it to already and for the miles the cars have covered, we've had no problems. We'd never guarantee that its not going to cause problems - at the end of the day its a modified part and its doing something that it wasn't intended to do - if people want a guarantee the best thing they can do is buy a new DMF.
We have a 8v diesel 147 courtesy car, my brothers 16v Sportwagon and soon my mapped 10v 156. We have another customer who did his own kit with a clutch bought from us a while back on a 10v that he does a lot of miles in and he did say he'd let me know if it ever went wrong, so far I've not heard from him.
